Foodie Friday – Best Nachos In Farmington

IMG_3229

I will tell you where you can buy the best nachos in Farmington – piled high, smothered in creamy refried beans, ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, other goodies, and topped with a healthy serving of guacamole. They are the best! It even says so on their menu.

Nachos hold a special place in my heart. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true.

Once upon a time when my husband and I were going through school and were living far below the poverty level, we would treat ourselves occasionally to our favorite restaurant, El Sombrero.

We would order the nacho grande for $8, share it, and then leave a $2 tip. So for $10, we could eat at a sit-down restaurant and have a great date night and meal!

So where can you eat the best nachos in Farmington? Los Hermanitos.

Must-haves for best nachos:

  • Totally shareable – nachos are so fun because they are shareable. That means that they have to be piled high.
  • Loaded, you know, with all the good stuff! Beans, beef, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, cheese, and jalapenos or green chile.
  • Skip the processed cheese please. We ate at a restaurant in Farmington that served their nachos with nacho cheese sauce. Great for baseball parks, but not what I expected at a restaurant.
  • Topped off with sour cream and guacamole! It’s a really good thing that my husband doesn’t like both of those things. I graciously offer to eat his share. Los Hermanitos serves the sour cream on the side.

Los Hermanitos

  • 3501 East Main Street and 2400 West Main Street
  • Price: $11.95

“BEST IN TOWN!” as their menu says.
  • Heat level: Completely mild if you order it without the pickled jalapenos.

Question: What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho cheese:) Do you have a different place where you eat your favorite nachos? Please leave a comment on the Living in Farmington, NM Facebook page or in the comment section up above. Thanks for reading!

I have a treat for you today!

Greg Morgan, of Greg M Photography, agreed to do an interview for this blog. She (yes, she is a woman) is a phenomenal portrait photographer in Farmington; I stalk her Facebook page. Her work is gorgeous, professionally consistent, and just takes my breath away. I think it will take yours away too!

Greg M

How did you get started in photography and how long have you been in business in Farmington?

A friend of mine in Texas started a photog business, and after about a year I thought that would be something I could be good at.  I have always had an eye for photography and was ready to really learn the craft.  In 2010, I officially opened shop.

What do you love about photography?

I love that pictures hold time still.  I also love getting to know my clients and being a part of their special memories.  I love the artistic work of photography.

Your work is gorgeous and inspiring! How do you bring out the true beauty in your clients?

First of all, thank you.  I think I have a connection with my clients so they feel comfortable.  Also, I give a lot of direction during the photoshoot.  I know the look I want so I direct my clients to get that.

When people are looking for a photographer in Farmington, what helpful criteria would you use to hire one?

We have many talented photographers in Farmington.  When you are choosing a photographer, view their work via website, Facebook, instagram.  Find the style you like best.

Fall is right around the corner. When is the best time to book a fall session to get those wonderful fall colors? (Do you have to book out months in advance or is a two week notice acceptable?)

The best time for fall pictures is the month of October.  I start booking fall shoots right now.  I only book one shoot per week so I get booked quickly.

For inspiring photographers, what advice would you give to them?

Learn your camera.  Learn to shoot manually.  Learn all about light.  And last, but not least, practice, practice, practice:)

What is your favorite lens?

I love my 85mm 1.4 and my 50mm 1.8.  i use them all the time.

Thank you!

Thanks for the interview Greg! I hope she inspired you with her answers and with her work. You can find more about her on her Facebook page here or her website here. Thanks for reading!

Have You Tried The #5?

Breakfast burrito from Blake's Lotaburger
The #5 in all its delicousness without the hashbrowns.

We, New Mexicans, have a love affair with our breakfast burritos. The #5 at Blake’s Lotaburger is one of the best. It takes breakfast burritos to a whole new level of deliciousness.

I didn’t even know this burrito existed until last week. Now, it is the breakfast that I dream about having every morning.

I even asked my neighbor about it who has lived here twenty plus years. We are both big fans of Blake’s. He didn’t even know about it. We both have never thought about ordering anything other than the #1 or #2.

What makes this breakfast burrito different is that it has a layer of the creamiest refried beans along with the standard fillings – 2 eggs, cheese, bacon or sausage, and green or red chile sauce. Who would have thought? It is so good. I hope you try it.

If you go:

  • For the best flavor, I order mine without the hashbrowns; otherwise, it mostly tastes like potatoes.
  • The green chile sauce in it is HOT. If you are new and haven’t developed a high heat tolerance (don’t worry, you will), you can order it without or in a seperate container.
  • Cost: $4.29 + tax.
  • The #3 is the same burrito without meat. It costs $3.79.
  • You can order breakfast until 11 a.m.

Question:

Where do you buy your favorite breakfast burrito?

Best of . . . Ice Cream in Farmington!

My nephew posing for the camera with his ice cream cone.
My adorable nephew posing for the camera with his ice cream cone.

I don’t know of a single person that does not like ice cream. Chocolate, yes, but not ice cream. If my family goes out for ice cream cones, we usually go to Baskin-Robbins.

Let me tell you about our LOVE for ice cream!!! When we created an acronym for our last name, we decided that the I should stand for “ice cream eaters.” So ice cream is an important part of our family identity.

IMG_1942
Could ice cream get any better? Yes, with waffle cones!

We love Baskin-Robbins for these reasons:

  1. Discount night. $1.29 for a kid’s scoop and $1.69 for a regular scoop on Tuesday after 5. The kid’s scoop is regularly over $2.
  2. Psychedelic colors that only the kids could love.
  3. Pink bubblegum ice cream – another favorite of the kids. Does that flavor bring back any childhood memories? Like, why did I like that as a kid?
  4.  Free samples on cute, pink spoons. The kids delight samples before they order.

Baskin-Robbins is a great place for a family date night on Tuesday night. Of course, ice cream is great any night, especially at Baskin-Robbins.

Does the purple and green ice cream remind you of the Joker from Batman (1989)?
The purple and green ice cream should be renamed the Joker (Batman, 1989).

Where is your favorite place to eat ice cream in Farmington? (I can’t wait to check out Freddy’s. Who can resist a building with ice cream cones attached to it?)

Where to go: Baskin-Robbins, 3030 East Main Street.

Best of . . . Glazed Doughnuts!

Doughnuts from Farmers. Yum-O!
Doughnuts from Farmers. Yum-O!

Where can you buy the lightest and fluffiest ethereal doughnuts in Farmington? Well, you can’t buy them in Farmington.

WHAT?

No worries. They are only a few miles outside of Farmington and at two locations.

I actually never cared for doughnuts. In my last town, I had a friend that had an obsession with these doughnuts that were sold at a particular grocery store. She was the one that got me hooked on doughnuts for life. Really and truly.

Then my family moved back to Farmington and I could not find a GOOD doughnut. It was one of the many things that I had missed about my last town.

About a year ago, I found the doughnuts again. Happy day!!! This meant that I no longer had to fantasize  about driving four hours or starting up my own doughnut chain just for a GOOD doughnut.

So where can you buy these doughnuts? The Farmers Market in Bloomfield and Flora Vista.

So if you want to know what a good doughnut tastes like, drive to a Farmers Market today. Go celebrate Friday or just the fact that you know where you can buy the best doughnuts around!

Sprinkles make them taste even better!
